How much energy does it take to manufacture a car?
When it comes to energy efficiency in the automotive industry, it is important to consider how much energy is actually needed to produce a single car. This is crucial in the context of environmental protection – higher consumption is usually associated with higher carbon dioxide production. Interestingly, electric cars are particularly detrimental in this regard, mainly due to the production of batteries. The amount of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere in the production of electric cars is up to 25% higher than in the production of gasoline vehicles. During operation, however, the results are much more favorable for electric cars – carbon dioxide emissions while driving are twice as low.
According to the Swiss scientific publication MDPI, it takes more than 55,000 MJ (megajoules) to produce a single car – the equivalent of the energy contained in almost 1,800 liters of gasoline. That is an enormous number, but it's only a fraction of the consumption over the vehicle's entire life cycle.
